OBESITY AS A DISEASE
When the American Medical Association (AMA) recently named obesity a disease, it was a sign of growing concern about weight problems. More than one third of adults and almost one fifth of children and teens are obese. This upgrade hopefully will nudge insurance companies to take obesity more seriously and improve coverage, which has been notoriously hard to get for weight-loss therapies.
The FDA has approved 2 new medications for use for treatment of obesity — QSYMIA and BELVIQ. We are developing good experience with these therapies at the Thyroid Institute and hope to see these have improved coverage by insurances. These medications have opened up options for weight loss for patients who were frustrated with their inability to lose weight.
