How much iodine does a pregnant mother need?

Because thyroid hormone production is increased in pregnancy, the iodine demand is also higher.  Sufficient iodine intake is essential for a normal pregnancy.  The beneficial effect of iodine supplementation are seen more so in the first two trimesters.  The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 250 micrograms a day for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
