Benign Thyroid Nodule Non-operative Treatment Options

Experienced, Compassionate Doctors in Provo, Utah

If you are dealing with a painful or concerning thyroid nodule, there are treatment options available to remove many different types of nodules. When a thyroid gland swells, it could initiate the growth of a thyroid nodule. These nodules may be filled with fluid, blood, or they could even be solid. Depending on the type of nodule you have and how large it becomes, it could create a painful or uncomfortable situation. Sometimes thyroid nodules result in problems swallowing or even breathing.

Our doctors at the Thyroid Institute of Utah can help you with your thyroid nodule. We offer a variety of treatments to effectively treat nodules without surgery. These noninvasive techniques may vary depending on the circumstances of each patient, but our doctors can work with you to determine the best course of action for your situation.

Common Thyroid Treatments

There are a number of different ways in which doctors may treat thyroid nodules. If you are interested in removing your nodule or decreasing the size, one of these treatment options might work for you.

Treatments include:

  • Radio Frequency Ablation

Through this procedure, your doctor will insert an antenna, or needle, into the thyroid nodule. The needle will be heated through the power of a generator, using a combination of friction and heat to break down the tumor. Over time, it will decrease the size of the nodule. This treatment option can sometimes be painful to recover from and might also result in voice changes.

  • Microwave Ablation

A microwave ablation also uses an antenna to directly impact the nodule. Your doctor will insert the needle into the nodule and, like a microwave, it will heat the nodule molecules around the needle, causing the surrounding cells within the nodule to die. This procedure can also be somewhat painful to recover from, and might cause minor skin burns. Microwave ablation can also be difficult to control and may sometimes result in the death of other, healthy surrounding tissues.

  • High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound

Typically regarded as the most promising technique for nodule removal, the High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound uses ultrasound waves to target the tumor without harming adjacent tissues. The procedure is noninvasive, requires minimal recovery time, and is less likely to result in scarring or infection at the treatment site. According to some doctors, this treatment option may result in up to 70% volume reduction of the thyroid nodule.

If you are interested in the High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound treatment, our medical staff may be able to help. We practice only the most effective, cutting-edge techniques in order to benefit our patients.
