Cancer in a Previously Benign Thyroid Nodule

A healthy 24-year-old lady was found to have a thyroid nodule.  The nodule was around 1 cm in size and was reported to be mainly cystic (fluid filled).  A biopsy was done and this reported that "no malignant cells” had been found.

She presented one year later for a re-evaluation.  The nodule/mass had grown somewhat in size, and I was a little uncomfortable with its appearance.  We decided to repeat the biopsy.  The solid part of the nodule was around 50% of the total mass.  This was biopsied and found to be cancerous!

The patient will be undergoing thyroid surgery, which we expect will be curative.
