Minimally-Invasive Surgery: The Latest Way of Performing Parathyroid Surgery

Minimally-invasive parathyroid surgery has become the preferred way to treat parathyroid disease for the following reasons:

  1. Less Pain.
  2. Faster Recovery.
  3. The incision is very small – usually about 1 inch.
  4. You can go home the same day.
  5. It is just as effective (if not more effective) than the traditional surgery as long as experienced, trained surgeons are involved.

The trick is identification of the diseased gland using high-frequency ultrasounds, confirming the position of the gland with Gamma Probes during surgery, and CONFIRMING the removal of the diseased gland by checking parathyroid hormone levels (iPTH levels) in the operating room to ensure that the levels  have normalized and dropped.
