Thyroid Disease and Pregnancy – Am I at risk?

EVEN WITH MILD HYPOTHYROIDISM, pregnant women are at risk for severe preeclampsia, preterm delivery, and/or pregnancy loss.

Some studies show that mild untreated or undertreated hypothyroidism can lead to lower IQ levels in children.

A common issue is the lack of adjustment of thyroid hormone dosage in women already on this medication prior to pregnancy.

In pregnancy, the requirements of thyroid hormone increases.  A diseased gland is unable to meet these requirements.  Similarly, if you’re already on thyroid hormone (synthroid/levoxyl, etc.), your dose needs to be urgently adjusted to get your hormone levels to the range required in pregnancy.
