Are You Suffering from Hyperthyroidism? We Offer Our Patients the Most Comprehensive Thyroid Care

Hyperthyroidism Care in Provo, UT

What is hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces too much of the thyroid hormone. A term closely associated with this condition is "thyrotoxicosis." This merely refers to high thyroid hormone levels in the blood stream. This condition tends to progress slowly; however, changes can occur abruptly in some young patients.

Have you been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism? Contact our team of compassionate and experienced endocrinologists today.

Individuals suffering from this condition tend to experience the
following symptoms:

  • Abnormal weight loss
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Fast heart rate
  • Trembling hands
  • Fast-growing fingernails
  • Sweating more than usual
  • Fatigue

Graves' Disease

The most common form of hyperthyroidism is known as Graves' disease. This condition is caused when antibodies turn on the thyroid, causing it to enlarge and secrete too much of the thyroid hormone. In Graves' disease, a common symptom can be abnormal swelling of the eyes and is more commonly found in women before they reach the age of 40.

Hashimotos Thyroiditis and Gluten Free diet

The autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis is one of the most common culprits of hypothyroidism. This occurs when the body generates antibodies that attack and destroy the thyroid. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is associated with other autoimmune diseases, including celiac disease. This however remains an ASSOCIATION, not a causation. To date, no study shows that avoiding gluten can reverse Hashimotos thyroiditis.

However, a recent study suggested that individuals with both Hashimoto's thyroiditis and celiac disease benefit from a gluten-free diet. 68 patients who only had Hashimoto's thryoiditis, and 35 patients with both diseases, went on a gluten-free diet. Staying on the same doze of thyroxine, the patients who had celiac disease experienced improved absorption of thyroxine while on the gluten-free diet.

Patients with even mild celiac disease often require a higher dose of thyroxine than patients with Hashimoto's thyroditis alone. This need for a higher dosage may be reversed by a gluten-free diet.

Treatment in Provo, Utah County & Salt Lake County

When you come into our office, we test the amount of thyroid hormones to confirm whether or not you have hyperthyroidism.

Treatment options vary by patient, and common treatments include:

  • Anti-thyroid drugs: This treatment blocks the thyroid gland's ability to make new hormones. This option is often used as a preparatory step to radioiodine treatment or surgery.
  • Radioactive iodine: This option destroys the overactive thyroid tissue. Once the radioactive iodine is in your body, it begins to attack the thyroid cells.
  • Surgery: This condition can permanently be cured by removing most of your thyroid gland. All surgeries are performed by experienced surgeons.
  • Beta- blockers: These block the action of the thyroid hormone to your body. This option gives quick results.

No matter which treatment you undergo, you can trust that you are in great care at The Thyroid Institute of Utah. We are dedicated to giving you quality and caring health services.
